The nature of love is known

Its fickle changes it has shown

It often claims a life as payment

A story now I will relay, man

She was a child in years and stature.

convene its capture

The courtroom filled with all the crowd,

The judges sat, their presence proud.

The guards cleared out the way for her.

This agony I cannot convey,

She begged the court to let her speak,

They granted what the girl did seek.

The moment that her words did start,

A flood of tears swept through the court.

‘My maiden shame, my great distress,

I lost to him in his caress.

I left my mother’s loving hold,

But the mad fool, he did betray,

I swore that I would make him pay.

I plunged a dagger in his breast,

Oh Judges, I have put him to rest.’

‘My dearest friend,

My wretched friend,

But now I fiercely hate you too.’

She took a ring from off her hand,

And spun it for all to understand.

And no one saw the subtle way

She swallowed poison in the fray.

This agony I cannot convey,

The weeping Mother and Father fold.

‘Oh wake, my child, you must awake!
